Female Orgasm in 4 Steps

1036605_lapIt’s not a big secret that women usually have fewer orgasms overall – and more trouble achieving them – than men do. There are ways, though, that a woman can learn to have more frequent and better orgasms if she wants to.

The first step in orgasm is excitement, where foreplay begins. The clitoris swells during this time, there are more vaginal secretions, and there is more blood flow to the genitals and to the breasts. The nipples also often harden and breathing and heart rate increases.

The plateau is stage two, and during that time the outer third of the vagina swells because of increased blood flow. The genital area may also appear darker and the heart rate and breathing stay elevated. The clitoris is extremely sensitive during that time, generally retracting beneath its hood. There can also be spasms in the hands and feet, as well as the face.

Step three is the actual orgasm, during which the vaginal muscles undergo rapid contractions with the first being the closest together, as well as the most intense. The uterine muscles contract as well, and the skin can look flushed. The breathing and heart rate of the woman are highest during that time, but this is a short stage, usually not lasting more than a few seconds.

The fourth step or stage is resolution. The vaginal muscles relax, the clitoris and nipples soften again, and breathing, blood pressure, and heart rate decrease to normal levels.
