Based on the current available evidence it appears that the notion that sexual intercourse somehow impairs athletic performance and that abstinence leads to sexual frustration and heightened aggression appears to be a popular myth. The bottom line is that in preparation for competition, athletes should try to maintain their normal routine and practices.

If this involves sexual intercourse, so long as normal sleep patterns are not disrupted and sleep quality is maintained, then it may well help relax the athlete. If an athlete sticks with the basics and does not strain himself or herself too much during sex, there’s no way that sex will affect his performance on the field. One thing’s for sure, if the athlete believes that sex will affect his ‘winning edge’ he should just wait until his match is over before going for it with his wife or girlfriend. Putting the blame on someone or some activity when you don’t win a competition is not a good thing.
